Courage in Vulnerability
KŪ THOUGHT
"Vulnerability is the birthplace of courage."
KŪ REFLECTION
"I ka nānā no a ʻike." – By observing, one learns.
When I started to be asked to speak to organizations on health and well-being, my talks were very surface-level. I thought I had to have everything figured out and the last thing I wanted to do was to show vulnerability in front of a group of strangers. I thought showing my true emotions or past struggles would make me appear weak. But then there was I talk I gave to a group of students and saw myself sitting as a student in that group. At that moment, I opened up about my struggles and shared my feelings with the group. I saw a shift in the students and formed a deeper and more authentic connection. I realized that vulnerability is not only a source of courage for yourself but also provides a source of courage for others, it creates the space to lead with empathy and strength.
