How Jason Momoa Trains for Superhero Status

When Jason Momoa came to Hawaii to show his support for Mauna Kea, it was all that people could talk about.  As an actor making his way on to the screen of the drama series Red Road and landing the role of the DC superhero Aquaman, Momoa is definitely causing a stir in the acting world.

We are stoked to see Momoa, as Aquaman, make an appearance in next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  For the role, he’s had to get into superhero shape and physique.

When celebrities share their workout routines, many think if they follow the same program they’ll get the same result.  Not going to happen.  There are more factors to take into account than just the training program like nutrition, rest, lifestyle, recovery and regeneration protocols, and stress levels to name a few.  So following Momoa’s workout will not get you a guarantee superhero physique.

In his interview with Esquire, Momoa shared a few insights when it comes to training which everyone can use and is much better than just telling people what his workout looks like.  That’s no help.

Here are a few thoughts from Momoa:

“There’s gonna be a good year of prep just to get your body ready to do the stunts.”

Main thing to look at here, is his mention of “a good year”.  Momoa makes it known that results don’t come as fast as everyone thinks.   It takes time and patience, and it’s definitely tiring.  But you gotta love it.

“Certain things get overdeveloped and they pull on other things, so I’m trying to find that balance.”

Great insight here.  Most guys spend so much time on their mirror muscles such as their chest, shoulders, biceps, and traps but neglect the back muscles and can’t forget the legs.  When one muscle gets over developed and overused your body begins to overcompensate which leads to aches and pains or even injury. Get on the foam roll, start stretching, or do Yoga.  It’s also important to balance out your training routine, for example using a 1:2 ratio for push-to-pull exercises.

“The hardest thing about all of it is keeping yourself in shape and doing your job.”

Momoa shared “doing Conan, those were 15-hour days, you’re doing stunts all day long, and I have to wake up at 5 and do lifts before work.”  What’s your excuse?  Keep yourself in shape is a job in itself.  If you have a family, you also want to make sure you spend time with them as well as do the things you love to do.  It’s best to create a system or schedule that’ll keep you on your goals.

“If you’re too disciplined, it can mess up your mind.”

So true.  Aside from busting his ass all day from the crack of dawn, he ends his day with three Guinness. “You need to have that treat for yourself,” Momoa said, “It keeps me really disciplined, and it tastes good too.”  Now does this mean it’s okay for you to suck ’em up all the time at the end of the work day? No, because what’s the rest of your lifestyle looks like.  Just because it works for Momoa doesn’t mean it will work for you.

“Whether it’s surfing, climbing, you just find things you love to do and you switch it up.”

Momoa mentioned, “If it’s not fun, then I don’t really want to be a part of it,” when it came to taking play outside.  Find something that you enjoy doing in the outdoors.  Living in Hawaii the possibilities are endless and can be anything from the mountain to the sea.

“Everything has technique to it.”

For all the videos and articles out there about exercises, you may think you are doing it right but you aren’t.  “So if there’s something you wanna try out,” Momoa said, “I think it’s always good to get a trainer or listen to people who know what they’re doing.” The smallest tweaks and approach to exercise can change everything.  It’s a totally different experience when you have someone getting you in the proper mindset and position to get the most out of your training.

This is Better Than a Workout Program

Momoa’s thoughts on training are practical and beneficial to everyone.  It’s way better than him giving his workout program because in all honesty it doesn’t even frickin’ matter.  There are a bunch of solid programs out there that give great results.  It’s not the program that gives you results, it’s YOU.

So take these insights from Jason Momoa into your current strength and fitness goals.  And for a parting, Momoa offers this last thought of wisdom:

Find a sensei. Drink Guinness.
