Be Agile like a Mongoose

Everyone wants to be an athlete these days or at least train like one.

And there are perfectly great reasons for this.  Who doesn’t want to be strong, fast, explosive, lean, and look damn good training?

With the influx of the strength and performance training trend, there is a frequent problem that plagues you – too much fancy drills that look cool when you do them and not enough purpose or teaching behind these drills.

There are a ton of great drills out there that you can easily find.  But those drills are missing a few key points that are overlooked.

The Ku Project, Human Performance Director, Daniel Aipa C.S.C.S, USAW has a few tips to help your agility training.  You’ll improve your times, beat your competition, and look like a sly mongoose weaving in and out of obstacles or maybe more like a supple leopard.

Just remember what Bob Marley said, “Every little action, there’s a reaction.”

Get those words in your head.

Not only does Bob Marley know a little bit about performance, but so does Isaac Newton.  Newton’s Third Law states:

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

3 CUES TO FOCUS ON

Stay Low – Lowering your center of gravity allows more stability and power in order to change directions.  When you stay up high, it takes more energy to change direction because center of gravity is high. Don’t be a coconut tree.

Shin Angle – Where your shins point, that’s where you body is going.  Many injuries occur when shin and knee is going one way and the upper half wants to go another way.  You improve shin angle by performing agility drills and being mindful of shin angle as well as becoming more aware of your surroundings while in motion.

Every Action has a Reaction – The faster you lower yourself into the ground more force will push back into you.  Get down into the ground with speed and force, and you will get off the ground just as fast.  This is what separates the winners from losers in agility.
