A Gift of Kū: Charity Water

There is a legend about the god Kū decided to live amongst a village.  He lived as a farmer and the villagers noticed his strength and working abilities while the women were also attracted to his muscular body.

But he met a beautiful woman and feel deeply in love with on another and started a family.  Suddenly a time of famine struck the village and everyone became ill, weak, and hopeless.  Kū saw his family suffering and decided it was time for him to leave.  He told his wife that he could help, but he must go far away.  With great sorrow she vowed her love for him and agreed to let him go.

Kū stood tall and erect in their field and slowly sink down into the ground, until he was completely buried and gone.  With her tears, Kū’s wife wet the soil where she last saw Kū.  When the morning came, a tiny green shoot came up from the soil from where Kū buried himself.  Suddenly that tiny green shoot continued to grow into a tall tree bearing ‘ulu, or breadfruit.

Soon the whole village was fed and the ‘ulu tree flourished thanks to Kū’s sacrifice and gift to his family.

Charity Water

I’m turning 31 this year on July 4th.  Yes, for the longest time I believed the fireworks and parade were just for me.  When you get closer to your birthday, people start asking you, “What do you want for your birthday?”

I usually answer with an “I don’t know” or “I don’t need anything”.

But this year I want to do something different.

Something – Kū.

Now I can’t bury myself into the ground and feed the masses, but I can dedicate myself towards helping others who are in need of something that many of us take for granted.

Water.

Statistics show, “Every day, about 1,400 children die from diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation.”

Again, “Every day, about 1,400 children die from diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation.”

So this year, The Ku Project and myself started a charity: water campaign and asking for my age in dollars (any amount would help) from everyone I know, which will be 31 come July 4th.

Every penny of the money raised will directly fund clean water projects in developing countries. Even better, charity: water will show us exactly which projects we funded once they’ve been fully completed (which takes about 18 months). That means we’ll know the locations and names of the communities we helped.

Help me reach our goal. Please donate to my birthday campaign and give the gift of Kū!
