The Culture of Lifting Stones

Cultures all around the world has an underlying culture of strength.

In ancient Hawaii, the Makahiki games celebrated the harvest and the god associated with rain and fertility.  The Makahiki marked a time for temporary halt of all activities of war.  The Makahiki was a time of celebration and competitive games.  There were boxing, sham battles that sometimes resulted in death, races, wrestling, and the famous hapai pohaku known as boulder lifting.

Recently we came across an inspiring and educational video from Rogue Fitness about the Basque Stone Lifters known as Levantadores.  There were a lot of gems shared in this short film.  The history of man is based around physical work.

If you hunted, you had to carry your kill.  You cut down trees and carried it down from the forest to build a home.  You searched the mountains and streams for rocks, picked them up, and walked them over to build a wall.  You had to push, pull, lift, drag, carry, and hold things as part of every day life.

The traditional lifestyle of hard work changed to today being more about making work easier.  So man built trucks, machines, computers, and modern tools to speed up the process.

Strength training and building a Kū body helps many of us fill that void.

We hope you enjoy the video and take something from it.
