The Art Form of The Kū Method

A frequent question that comes up from many of the haumana/athletes at The Kū Project is along the lines of, “People ask me what style of training we do and I don’t know how to explain it.  How can we explain it?”

A style should never be the gospel truth, the laws and principles of which can never be violated.  Man, the live, creative human being, is always more important than any established, sterile style. – Bruce Lee

Many systems out there make an individual mold into their specific system.  To me, physical performance is an art form of self expression.  Actually, physical performance invigorates self expression.

To explain The Kū Method (TKM) as a style misses the point of what we do.  Life is in constant movement, like the currents in at sea.  Styles are fixed forms that create resistance against currents.

With the constant flow of information and media we consume on a daily basis, we are attracted by special techniques and fancy equipment that don’t add real value if one becomes obsessed with it.  I see many individuals who are on the search for that coach, gym, or group would will satisfy this craving that becomes in reality – a crutch.

WHAT IS THE KU METHOD?

There is no real form or special training with a set of progressions, a particular approach, or real structure.

It looks at physical performance from all possible angles and uses any tools and means to serve purpose.  While other systems create templates and set progressions to follow, we free ourselves from them unless it’s necessary for a particular purpose.

When one becomes obsessed with a particular system, one becomes confined.  My hope is to not have haumana/students cling to any styles or see our way as the only true way.  That goes against the ability of self expression.  When you are obsessed with such a system, you no longer can freely express yourself.  You feel you must mold yourself into that particular mold or image in order to be part of that specific system.

We have no sets techinques or progressions, and no set rules or lifestyle that makes up TKM.  Actually TKM is only a name used, the term doesn’t matter because the term doesn’t define who we are.

Yes, we have no real structure in our teaching just more of an understanding of what is necessary to be efficient and effective.  We base our practice on feel, self-awareness, and individuality to find the best manner for the purpose of performance.  We take into account proper movement, exercise economy, energy systems and energy flow, and exercise progression amongst others.

TKM uses the process of simplifying while many styles continue to accumulate in order to tantalize individuals who are in search of the fancy techniques and equipment which in reality only becomes crutches.

A teacher, a really good teacher, is never a giver of truth; he s a guid, a pointer to truth.  – Bruce Lee

TKM allows you to continuously grow and learn how to free yourself from systems and fixed forms.  It is about fluidity is understand the higher purpose of physical performance for each individual.  We look at physical performance and training as a tool for self expression and awareness.

Now, keeping with the philosophy of TKM, it will constantly evolve and change because that is what life does.
