How Your Phone Can Help You Lose Weight

Let’s be real.  Today, the phone has become a piece of clothing.  You feel naked with out it.  Some may even freak out more when they lose their phone than their wallets.

You want to piss someone off?  Hide their phone.  It’s a guarantee.

With all the weight loss, exercise, and fitness apps out there, every phone has this simple tool on them.  A camera.  No, it’s not for taking a half naked pictures of your self (front, side, and back) although it can be effective.

One of the first steps to take when you are trying to get a hold of your nutrition is to make a food log over 3-4 days to see for yourself what exactly you are eating.  Most of the times, self awareness is all you need for a reality check.

Now I’ve heard all sorts of excuses on this assignment.

  • Forgot the notepad
  • Lost the notepad
  • Forgot to do it but wrote down everything they remembered
  • It was a crazy 4 days and ate like crap
  • It took too much time

I could turn blue in the face and blow a gasket with the inclination that all of the above is a bunch of fuckin excuses and that they are a lost cause.

Or…

Find an approach that triggers action within others.

You + Phone Camera = Weight Loss

When you are trying to achieve a particular result, self awareness plays a key role.  Self awareness is important because when you have a better understanding of yourself, you are able to see yourself as an unique individual apart from others around.  The best approach to life is YOUR approach.  By doing so, you become more empowered to make proper changes for the better.  In this case – it’s weight loss.

4 weeks out from competition

Instagram has been filled with people using it as a way to share their journey towards a fitness goal because claiming your goal publicly and sharing it with others to follow is another effective tool.  But not everyone wants to be so bold and put themselves out there like that and you don’t have to.  Personally, I’ve done it with great results for a Men’s Physique Competition I participated at in June 2014 under the premise of performing no cardio and not measuring any food.

What’s the assignment?

Similar to the food log of writing every thing you eat and drink over 3-4 days, you will snap a picture of everything you eat.

Don’t act like you’ve never done this before.  It’s already a social norm compared with writing down everything you eat.  In fact, everyone thinks they are a food photographer, but unless you are actually going to do something with the picture, What’s the use?  (Note: I take pictures of food for reference, and delete it after. I know what I eat for breakfast every damn morning.)

One of the complaints I get from people writing down what they eat, is that other people begin to question what they are doing and then start giving their advice for what they should be doing.  Everyone thinks they are a frickin expert these days.

For the course of 3-4 days, take a picture of everything you eat and drink without trying to eat healthier.  Just do your normal routine and go off of that.  Even better, make sure some at least one of the days fall on the weekend.

If you are serious about taking action towards eating healthier and improving your overall performance through nutrition, you must be more aware of what you are doing now.

Here are a couple things that may come up while taking the pictures:

  • You may feel embarrassed because right off the back you already see the problem.  It’s okay, you have to go through this period of self realization.
  • It may not bother you because you always take food pictures and post it on social media.  You don’t thinking anything of it.  But it will hit you at the end of the 3-4 days when you look over all the pictures and ask yourself, Is this a healthy lifestyle? Is this Kū?

Snap Away

It’s the small things you do that can have a huge effect on your results.  Don’t try to make huge changes all at once because it only brings frustration and a surefire way to fail.  You cannot expect to fully change your diet overnight and sustain it for a long period of time.

People who’ve done something in that nature have found themselves packing all the weight back on and then some.

There’s no such thing as overnight success.  There’s always a process and a journey one must take.
