MOʻOLELO: ALMOST Catching The Biggest Fish Ever

I never knew I enjoyed writing until I was pulled into a writing class in college because I needed more credits for the semester.

Now that I look back upon it, I’m not surprised.  Growing up being ashamed of the way I spoke, I remembered I wrote down a lot of things on random pieces of paper and notebooks, and still do to this day.

A new space I’m adding to The Ku Project is MO’OLELO, which is simply – storytelling.

As a kid growing up in Hawaii, I used to cast off the shores of the windward side and fish off the Waimanalo pier. It’s been a very long time since I’ve done any of those.

I remember one day while I fished off the pier in Waimanalo, something snagged my line. At first my heart jumped because my legs were dangling off the side of the pier.  I grabbed the pole with one hand, bolted up to my feet,  and yelled, “I get one big one!”

Papa, who sat on his blue and white beach chair with his coconut hat on, responded, “Right on Danny boy.”

I furiously pulled up and then reeled, over and over. I felt my hands sweat and my arms burning.  My pole bent more and I worried my pole was going to break. Every time I pulled the pole up, my eyes squinted waiting for the snap.

Papa said, “Looks like a big buggah!”

“Whoa, Papa my arms tired,” I said, hoping he would take over.

“Boy that’s the biggest fish you’ll ever have on the line.”

“F’real!! What kine fish?” I asked to hear my prized catch.

“Oahu,” he laughed.

True story.
