KU GOLD MILK

I’ve always been interested in learning how food affects the body and different uses and benefits of herbs, spices, vitamins, and such.

This coconut milk concoction known as Gold Milk has come up often and when I heard podcaster and Director of Human Optimization of Onnit, Kyle Kingsbury, talk about how he, his wife, and son drink this concoction at night time, I felt as if the universe was telling me to look more into this drink.

Plus, I love coconut.

What is Gold Milk?

Gold Milk is basically a blend of spices and herbs in heated coconut milk and water. The ‘gold’ comes from a serving of turmeric as the main spice which gives its golden appearance. Black pepper is also important because it helps with the absorption of the turmeric.

This mixed beverage has been used in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries for it’s abilities as a natural anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-arthritic, among others.

According to these traditional practices, the benefits behind this beverage are plentiful such as:

  • Improves memory and speeds learning
  • Slows the progression of neurodegenerative disease
  • Reduces LDL cholesterol
  • Promotes brain and heart health
  • Reduces free-radical damage and oxidative stress
  • Relieves arthritis pain and inflammation

HOW TO MAKE KU GOLD MILK

Now, with anything I come across and dive into, we have to KŪ it up.

First, the main ingredients to all ‘Gold Milk’ are coconut milk, water, turmeric, cinnamon, and black pepper,

To make it KŪ, we added in pa’akai (sea salt) from Kauai, organic honey for a little sweetness, and sliced ginger for more spice and health benefits

Main Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch black pepper
  • Thinly sliced ginger (1-2 inch piece)
  • 1 teaspoon of organic honey

Instructions:

  • Combine the coconut milk, water, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, honey, and black pepper in a medium saucepan
  • Bring the liquid until it begins to steam and let simmer for 5-10 minutes. Do not boil
  • Pour the liquid into a cup or small pot through mesh strainer
  • Enjoy
