According to Hawaiian legends, Ku symbolizes male or husband and Hina symbolizes female or wife. They are the great ancestral gods of heaven and earth.
Ku can be defined as “rise upright,” while Hina is defined as “leaning or lying down”. Ku is a representation of the rising sun and Hina belongs to the moon. Also, Ku is known for strength and power, and on the other hand, Hina is known for gracefulness and softness (kind and gentle).
A friend of mine told me, “You need to start doing yoga.”
“Why?” I asked.
“You need some Hina in your life. You can’t always be Ku,” she replied.
She’s right. I’m all about being Ku.
This made me take a step back and re-evaluate the situation because balance between Ku and Hina is important and I wasn’t sure if I was giving any time to Hina.
During one of the KUVIBES episodes on YouTube, I spoke about having a busy and hard training day and was happy to head home and be with my son and wife. That is when it hit me. I do have Hina in my life.
It didn’t have to be in a form of exercise. To be honest, I think yoga is great and I feel good after doing it, but I’m definitely never going to consider myself close to being a yogi. I love lifting and slamming weight around too much and I intend to do it for the rest of my life.
My form of Hina is waking up in the morning and cooking breakfast for my wife and son while she gets ready for work. It’s when I play with my son in the morning and get him ready to go to grandma and grandpa’s house. It’s when I kiss my wife goodbye as she leaves for work and hello when I come home. It’s when we sit down at the table as a family and eat dinner. It’s when we get my son ready for bed and read him books. It’s when I kiss my wife goodnight and tell her, “I love you.”
That’s my Hina.
Do I believe there can be a balance between Ku and Hina? No.
Not for me. Is that bad? No.
That’s just me.
